we kindly invite you to submit an abstract to the session “Varieties of Qualitative Perspectives in Social Network Analysis” at the Sunbelt Conference in Utrecht June 26 – July 1, 2018.

Description:

Qualitative approaches in Social Network Analysis (SNA) are a rapidly growing field of expertise. A variety of methodological traditions and theories inspire this research, including conversation analysis, ethnography, small story research, field theory, social world theory and interactionism. In empirical studies diverse qualitative methods are applied and different kinds of data are taken as qualitative data material including interviews, observations and visualizations. Fundamental to the qualitative approaches is a close entanglement of theory and method in the sense of a methodical holism. Their internal coherence is essential since theoretical assumptions orient methods and vice versa.

In this session we want to engage in a discussion on how different traditions and schools of thought orient qualitative research on social networks. We invite participants to present their empirical approaches and to discuss how they integrate theory, methodology and method in their research.

When submitting your abstract, select the Organized Session title “Varieties of Qualitative Perspectives in Social Network Analysis” from the list of session titles.

The submission deadline is 1 February 2018. Authors will be notified on acceptance until March 2018.

Die Trierer Summer School on Social Network Analysis bietet im Rahmen eines einwöchigen Intensivangebots eine umfassende Einführung in die theoretischen Konzepte, Methoden und Anwendungen der Sozialen Netzwerkanalyse. Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an NachwuchswissenschaftlerInnen und Studierende aller geistes-, kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Fächer, die sich mit der Analyse sozialer Strukturen befassen und die Methoden der Sozialen Netzwerkanalyse (SNA) näher kennenlernen und einsetzen möchten.

 

Die Veranstaltung auf einem Blick:

– individuelle Forschungsberatung durch die DozentInnen

Preis der Sektion „Soziologische Netzwerkforschung“ der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS) für herausragende Aufsätze zur soziologischen Netzwerkforschung

 

Mit diesem Preis zeichnet die Sektion alle zwei Jahre den besten Fachaufsatz aus. Der Preis ist mit 250 Euro dotiert und wird im Jahr 2017 zum zweiten Mal vergeben. Der Preis soll Relevanz und Potenzial der soziologischen Netzwerkforschung in empirischer wie theoretischer Hinsicht unterstreichen und den Nachwuchs fördern. Die Preisverleihung findet im Rahmen der European Conference on Social Networks (EUSN) im September 2017 in Mainz statt.

Über die Verleihung des Preises entscheidet eine Jury aus drei arrivierten Netzwerkforscher*innen. In diesem Jahr besteht die Jury aus Prof. Dr. Betina Hollstein, Prof. Sophie Mützel, PhD und Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Sodeur.

Prämiert wird ein Aufsatz in einer deutsch- oder englischsprachigen Fachzeitschrift aus den Jahren 2015 und 2016 im Bereich der soziologischen Netzwerkforschung oder angrenzender Fachgebiete. Als maßgebliche Kriterien beachtet die Jury die Originalität und Bedeutung der empirischen oder theoretischen Fragestellung sowie das Niveau der Analyse. Der Preis wird bevorzugt an Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen während oder kurz nach der Promotion verliehen. Mitglieder des Vorstands und der Jury sind als Kandidat*innen ausgeschlossen.

Workshop „Introduction to Qualitative Structural Analysis (QSA)“

 Qualitative Structural Analysis (QSA) is an approach for analyzing qualitative network data (e.g. network maps and narrative data from interviews). QSA is based on procedures from qualitative research (sequential analysis, sensitizing concepts, memo writing) and integrates these procedures with concepts from formal network analysis. QSA is thus a combination of the analytical perspective of structural analysis and analytical standards taken from qualitative social research.

In the workshop participants will get an insight in the theoretical and methodical basis as well as basic principles of QSA. Here we introduce both basic premises of qualitative social research and of social network analysis and how they can be accomplished and integrated via QSA. We explore the process of analysis via QSA and introduce hands-on methods for the qualitative analysis of network data. Amongst others, we discuss how QSA allows to sequence and interpret qualitative data material via structure-, relation- and actor-focused questions and how concepts from SNA can be used as sensitizing concepts to guide the analysis. Strategies to integrate material from different sources in the analysis (e.g. qualitative interview and network map) are also discussed.

The format of the workshop encompasses presentations to introduce the basics, small group sessions to practice hands-on analysis strategies and open question slots.

Note: Participants get the opportunity to bring own qualitative network data from own empirical projects to be analysed in small group analysis sessions (network map, transcript of interview part, etc) and – depending on the number of workshop participants – the possibility to discuss questions in own qualitative network projects. Please contact Andreas Herz (herzand@uni-hildesheim.de) before the workshop to organize who brings qualitative material to the sessions.
